    • www.filmchannel1.com CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR has already been nominated for several awards, is sure to be nominated for some more, and most definitely will win some awards in 2008. It stars Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman; it was directed by Mike Nichols and written by Aaron Sorkin; and it is being publicized as "based on the story that is so true and engaging that artistic liberties are not needed, even if they are taken in the film." One liberty that must surely have been taken is that the film makes the efforts of the three main characters who are given credit for helping Afghanistan become the first country in history to defeat the USSR appear much funnier than they were in real life at the time that it all happened. Hanks plays the title character, a Congressman from Texas who loved a good time; Roberts plays Joanne Herring, a wealthy Houston socialite who loved a good cause; and Hoffman plays Gust Avrakotos, a CIA agent of Greek descent who loved a good fight. Together they create a story so good that apparently you couldn't make it up, although you could take a few liberties. The time is 1980, and Charlie is sitting in a hot tub in Las Vegas with some strippers when he sees Dan Rather on television reporting from Afghanistan, which the Soviet Union had invaded in 1979. Charlie can double US assistance to Afghanistan with just one phone call, but he wants to do more. Joanne arranges for Charlie to meet the president of Pakistan, where Charlie <b>...</b>
