AFGHAN GIRL

    • Journalist Steve McCurry sets out to find the Afghan girl he photographed for National Geographic Magazine in 1984, in a refugee camp in Pakistan, but lost track of over the years. The image of her face, with a red scarf draped loosely over her head and her piercing sea-green eyes staring directly into the camera, became a symbol both of the 1980s Afghan conflict and of the refugee situation worldwide. The image itself was named "the most recognized photograph" in the history of National Geographic Magazine, but the girl's name remained unknown until McCurry found her 17 years later in the Tora Bora region of Afghanistan in 2002.
